Blockchain Consensus Protocols in the Wild

چکیده
A blockchain is a distributed ledger for recording transactions, maintained by many nodes without central authority through a distributed cryptographic protocol. All nodes validate the information to be appended to the blockchain, and a consensus protocol ensures that the nodes agree on a unique order in which entries are appended. Consensus protocols for tolerating Byzantine faults have received renewed attention because they also address blockchain systems. This work discusses the process of assessing and gaining confidence in the resilience of a consensus protocols exposed to faults and adversarial nodes. We advocate to follow the established practice in cryptography and computer security, relying on public reviews, detailed models, and formal proofs; the designers of several practical systems appear to be unaware of this. Moreover, we review the consensus protocols in some prominent permissioned blockchain platforms with respect to their fault models and resilience against attacks. 1998 ACM Subject Classification C.2.4 Distributed Systems, D.1.3 Concurrent Programming

متن کاملOn the Danger of Private Blockchains
Consensus is a fundamental problem of distributed computing. While this problem has been known to be unsolvable since 1985, existing protocols were designed these past three decades to solve consensus under various assumptions. Today, with the recent advent of blockchains, new consensus implementations were proposed to make replicas reach an agreement on the order of transactions updating what ...
متن کاملA Review on Consensus Algorithms in Blockchain
Block chain technology is a decentralized data storage structure based on a chain of data blocks that are related to each other. Block chain saves new blocks in the ledger without trusting intermediaries through a competitive or voting mechanism. Due to the chain structure or the graph between each block with its previous blocks, it is impossible to change blocking data. Block chain architectur...
متن کاملNon-Interactive Proofs of Proof-of-Work
Blockchain protocols such as Bitcoin provide decentralized consensus mechanisms based on proof-of-work (PoW). In this work we introduce and instantiate a new primitive for blockchain protocols called Non-Interactive-Proofs-of-Proof-of-Work (NIPoPoWs) which can be adapted into existing PoW-based cryptocurrencies. Unlike a traditional blockchain client which must verify the entire linearly-growin...
متن کاملChain of Trust: Can Trusted Hardware Help Scaling Blockchains?
As blockchain systems proliferate, there remains an unresolved scalability problem of their underlying distributed consensus protocols. Byzantine Fault Tolerance (BFT) consensus protocols offer high transaction throughput, but can only support small networks. Proof-of-Work (PoW) consensus protocol, on the other hand, can support thousands of nodes, but at the expense of poor transaction through...
